Sustainable alternative to the Advent calendar
Christmas time is also considered a time of reflection and gratitude. At BOCK, we want to use this time to give something back – to our customers, our employees, and our environment.
Since the topic of sustainability is very close to our hearts, we have been giving away "The Change Chocolate" from Plant-for-the-Planet as a sustainable alternative to the traditional Advent calendar to our customers for many years. This gives us the opportunity to show our gratitude for the loyalty and great cooperation with a delicious attention and do something good for the environment at the same time.
This year, we will also replace our chocolate Santa Claus, which is given to our 760 employees at BOCK 1 every year on St. Nicholas Day, with a bar of Change Chocolate.
The emergence of the conceptThe Change Chocolate
In 2012, 13-year-old Felix was invited to speak to 350 chocolate industry bosses. After explaining to them how important trees are for combating the climate crisis, he asked them for a donation of one euro per ton of chocolate produced. Not one of them was willing to contribute.
"This is shocking," he said as he left the stage in tears.
A few days later, 12-year-old Max had an idea. Let's make our own chocolate. A chocolate that plants trees.
The children and young people of Plant-for-the-Planet have designed a chocolate that is both fair-trade and climate-neutral in production. With this chocolate, every piece is literally good for something: for the environment, for people and for the future!
Manufacturers and retailers waive their profits so that 20 cents of every bar of The Change Chocolate sold goes to Plant-for-the-Planet, which means that for every five bars sold, one tree is planted. Most of the trees were planted in the Volcano Valley project in Mexico. The rest in other projects in Mexico and the Philippines.
The high quality of the chocolate was also confirmed by the renowned “Stiftung Warentest”, which declared “The Change Chocolate” the best among 25 milk chocolates they tested (12/2018 issue).
The Change Chocolate is a product of Plant-for-the-Planet Service GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of the Plant-for-the-Planet Foundation. The children and youth initiative is happy about every donation, which can be used for trees as well as for the training of children to become ambassadors for climate justice.
